One can find many candidates for the designation as “planet’s greatest invention.” The wheel. The movable type. The steam engine.
According to a recent publication, however, that title should go to a mechanised timber mill conceived by Dutch inventor Corneliszoon van Uitgeest during 1593.
“Before automated sawing, building a simple trading ship required around ten sawyers working over three months,” writes Jaime Dávila. “With wind-powered lumber mills, an identical amount of processed timber might be produced within seven days.”
Thanks to their rapid mechanical cutter, that converted logs to planks using virtually no manual labor, Dutch builders could construct ships more quickly compared to any other nation, which unleashed a century of Netherlands maritime, financial and cultural dominance in the continent and the globe.

Corneliszoon’s sawmill, contends Dávila, represented “mankind’s first true factory machine.” A wind turbine turned a wheel. One component transformed its circular movement to vertical motion for the saw. Another component changed the spinning movement into a lateral motion feeding the log toward the cutter. A geared mechanism shifted the wood forward a measured step each stroke.
“Every component was modest on its own. Corneliszoon’s genius lay in how to combine them so they operated in a perfectly controlled order, sawing with each downward motion and advancing on every return motion. It was a remarkably clever use of fundamental components.”
